Not All (ITAD) Vendors Are Created Equal
– Choose Wisely

A pen laying on a stack of papers on a table surface. The top paper has a Yes/No checklist. We like to follow our own advice when choosing vendors because subtle differences matter. When it comes to choosing your IT Asset Destruction Vendor, little things can make a significant difference.

And following this advice when selecting your ITAD vendor of choice will help you choose all of your vendors. A little due diligence saves a lot of headache(s).

Let’s review some essential discovery call discussion points.

  • Will I have a point of contact? Nothing is worse than establishing a relationship with a sales team and then being handed off in a process where no one calls you back. Doing business with a team with a genuine hand-off process means your needs are being addressed.
  • How far is their reach, and can they handle growth? While this is important in any business relationship, in ITAD, it is a difference-maker. You want a vendor who can support your growth.
  • Are they a certified vendor? Just as you complete your due diligence, it’s important to know if your vendor is also held accountable. This is more than just being a member of an association – for example, being a NAID member vs. being NAID AAA Certified.
  • Do they understand compliance and regulations specific to your industry, and what current clients do they already work with within your industry? As regulations grow for data privacy across sectors, the right vendors should be thoroughly versed and compliant. If you are teaching them – it’s not a good sign.
  • Are there guarantees or “insurance” that they do what they say they will do? Guarantees are one thing and are essential, but companies that “insure” their promises are genuinely different, for example, carrying Downstream Data Coverage. When a vendor is willing to pay for the right insurance (above and beyond what is required), it usually means that they are confident enough in their processes that they know it won’t be used.
  • What do you get? In vendor selection, it’s always vital to get three or more quotes or RFP completions (depending on the level or depth of the service you are seeking). In doing so, you can create a comparison document. Cheapest isn’t always best if they miss all the checkmarks that give you confidence in your selection.
