When selecting an ITAD partner, it’s essential for organizations to understand why and what this attestation means. SOC 2 applies to non-finance service organizations that provide intangible goods and services. For organizations of all sizes, that may apply to various partners and vendors. It applies to your IT Asset Destruction (ITAD) partner.

An ITAD provider must provide compliant data destruction services to secure an organization’s information. This means providing a highly skilled team trained to capture, secure, and destroy the data contained within your computer and other technology equipment, such as printers, smartphones, and tablets. However, if you watch the industry news, you know not all ITAD partners are created equally. Breaches do occur.

What does SOC 2 mean?

SOC 2 means a company takes its responsibility to protect the client seriously. They have undergone a rigorous audit that shows their systems are controlled and secure and meet five trust services categories (Security, Availability, Confidentiality and/or Privacy, and Processing Integrity). Furthermore, their leadership team is deeply involved in writing, implementing, and managing policies and procedures, documenting how this security and control continues on a daily basis. A CPA then audits and approves the organization for the SOC 2, Type 1 attestation.

The process of having an audit conducted demonstrates to customers that the company and its services meet and exceed the ITAD industry standards for security. “Reclamere partners with organizations across the United States in healthcare, financial services, and the commercial sector; the completion of our SOC 2, Type I Audit represents our commitment to enhancing our own cyber security posture for those clients,” said Angie Singer Keating, CEO of Reclamere. “SOC 2 Type I attestation demonstrates to our industry that Reclamere meets and exceeds the strictest industry standards for security and trust controls.”

Regardless of your industry, if selecting an ITAD vendor, look for SOC 2 attestation in your vetting process.
